Behind the Easel
Cave of the Heart
Modern American dancer Martha Graham choreographed Cave of the Heart, telling the myth of Medusa, a princess and a sorceress, after Jason betrays her and marries another. The dance transforms Medea, as the Sorceress cleansed by flames, returning her to her Father, the Sun. The canvas began with the Sun in gold lear at upper right. I used earth tones (raw umber), and added starry constellations and nebulas, feeling as though writing on the walls of the Cave, in the the chambers of the Heart.
